Our forests and local workers need the same solutions: local jobs, local decision making, and long term planning using secondary growth forest.
Show up and tell the BC Government that the forest economy should work for BC workers and biodiversity, not for the benefit of large corporations.
Canfor’s actions in BC are resulting in: No Logs, No Wildlife and No Jobs.
Letter from Kelly Johnson, President of the Public and Private Workers of Canada
January 13, 2023
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Canfor ltd, one of BC’s largest Forestry companies, has announced the permanent closure of its pulp operations at PG Pulp Prince George BC eliminating up to 300 direct well-paying jobs as well as the indirect jobs that have supported that community’s growth for 60 years.
With all the closures in our Forest industry in the past decade plus, these decisions will continue to erode the rural communities’ finances and add significant burden to those taxpayers to make up the difference. This will also impact the Governments coffers to help pay for all the legislation announcements of the last year.
The PPWC is shocked by this decision to close this plant and will hold Canfor accountable to minimize the impact on workers, families and communities who have given so much to make this large corporation wealthy over the past decades.
We will be challenging our governments, at every level to do better, ensuring the viability, competitiveness and sustainability of our Forest based Industries so future generations will be able to thrive and earn a fair and reasonable living throughout this province.
Our thoughts are with PPWC Local 9 as they adjust to this very consequential news.
In Solidarity,
Kelly Johnson
National President
Public and Private Workers of Canada
